1994 Fleer "Highlights" Promo Sheet

With Tim Salmon!

From the 2010 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards:
To introduce its special insert card series honoring 1993 A.L. Rookie of the Year Tim Salmon and Phillies stars John Kruk and Darren Daulton, Fleer issued the 5" x 7" promo sheet. The three player cards on the sheet are similar to the issued versions except they have black overprinting on front and back which reads, "PROMOTIONAL SAMPLE." The non-player segment of the sheet has details about the inserts and special mail-in offers for additional cards.

I picked this up cheap on ebay for my Tim Salmon collection.

The same card, card #69 would be in the base set without the PROMO type. I don't yet have the base card.

The special "Highlight" insert cards targeted Salmon, John Kruk, and Darren Daulton.

Salmon had 12 cards in this insert set "Highlighting" his AL Rookie of the Year Award.

An additional 3 could be obtained thru mail-in.

I have only 4 of the 15 cards in the set (any traders?).

Here's the details for the Tim Salmon mail-in offer, only 10 1994 Fleer wrappers and a buck-fifty.

Fleer issued several other Tim Salmon insert cards in 1994. The only one I have is card #5 from the Award Winners 6 card subset.

Antique Mall Angels

Stopped by my local antique mall searching for baseball cards and came away with a bunch of Angels at bargain prices.

I first came across a box full of unopened 1984 Donruss Action All-Stars for 50 cents a pack. I could have easily cleaned them out but I was only interested in Angels. I found Freddy Lynn on the top of one pack, so thats the one I bought.

In the same stall I found this 1996 All-Star ballot for a buck.



I collect All-Star ballots, and I thought that this was one that I needed. Turns out I already had it, and it was punched.


Angels that were voted for are SS Gary DiSarcina and C Jorge Fabregas.

And interesting write-in vote for Andy Fox who played for the Yankees in 1996.



Next I came across an endcap that was essentially a bookshelf full of toys and stuff. Hanging on hooks were 9-pocket pages with 18 cards each. Typically overpriced at something like 5-10 bucks a page, these were not marked so.


That's 95 cents a sheet! I grabbed them all up so no one else could come along and get a good one that I hadn't gotten to yet, and proceeded to go through each sheet, front and back, one at a time.

Steve Busby is a broadcaster for the Rangers, I've gotten his autograph several time and have run out of cards of him.


This Cookie Rojas card is just such a cool looking card, I wanted it.


Didn't have this 1993 Studio Wally Joyner card, but now I do.

I like these the Father-Son cards from the 1985 Topps set, so I would have bought this sheet on that fact alone, but then I saw the two Angels cards and knew that it was meant to be.

The shiney caught my eye, then JT Snow caught my eye. I didn't see Tony Phillips until I checked the page out again afterwards. The bonus was a 1982 Butch Hobson.



So, some fun at the antique mall, a bunch of Angels cards, and a stack of cards I'll use for autographs, for a little over 5 bucks.

Trade Mail from The Emerald City

This is a long overdue post of a trade I finished with Larry, the storekeeper at Emerald City Diamond Gems over a month ago.

One of the reasons its so late is because I wanted to take a picture of this...


...an abundance of Angels cards that Larry mailed me. So many he sent them in a box.
He's a giver.

It's been so long now I don't even remember what I sent him in return. But I know it wasn't so many cards I needed a box to fit them.

So first I couldn't find the camera. Then I found out my son had it. Then it needed new batteries. Then I couldn't find the cable...anyhow, you get the idea.

Along with a ton of commons to fill team sets, the following cards were of particular interest to me.

Nice minor leaguers I've never heard of. I'll have to look them up on minorleagueaddressesplus to see if they have mailing addresses for these guys.

This Jim Slaton Donruss card stands out because of the background:


Looks like a bunch of aliens in the stands eyeing to eat him up when he gets pulled. That or the stands are filled with giant frosted donuts.


A 2004 National Baseball Card Day Big Daddy Vladdy in chrome. I like it.


A sweet looking 1967 Topps Angels Rookie Stars. I have this card autographed by both players, but it's good to have a clean copy too.


1982 Topps Home Run Leaders. I didn't realize that Bobby Grich ever led the American League, well tied, with 3 other players, with 22 home runs. I'll have to see what his career totals are for HRs. Seems like an abnormality.

Trade Mail from Reader Ryan

Reader and new friend Ryan reached out to me after he stumbled upon my blog while researching a player. Ryan is getting into TTM autographs and wanted some suggestions on how to go about it. In exchange for my time he said he'd send me some Angels stuff. Cool for me, but how about I throw him a little stack of Angels cards in return. I did.

Here's what Ryan sent me.

Included in the package were these two nice 2010 Bowman Platnum cards.


I needed this years pocket schedule so he sent me 4. These are Version 1. See the little V1 in the lower left corner. Bet you didn't know pocket schedules came in different versions. Usully this just means a different sponsor on the back.

He looked for the Spanish version too but it seems the Angels were due a shipment and didn't have any more at the time.


I'm looking for stuff with the Angels 50th Anniversary logo on it, so Ryan snagged 4 of these fan survey cards for me. Maybe I'll do the survey and if I win the $2,000 I'll share it with him. Maybe.


And I always dig used Angels tickets.

June 15, 1965: Traded by the California Angels to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later and cash. The Cleveland Indians sent Bubba Morton (September 15, 1965) to the California Angels to complete the trade.


ANGELS DEBUT:
Started the game behind the plate as the battery mate of Marcelino Lopez (who threw a complete game win). In his first at-bat he struck out against Mickey Lolich in the third inning and finished the day 1 for 4, and scored a run in a 4-2 win against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, April 19, 1965 (N) at Chavez Ravine.

ANGELS RECORD:
Phil had 22 at-bats over 9 games and hit .136 with 3 hits and a run scored. In 63 innings behind the plate he made 52 put-outs in 59 chances and committed 1 error.

- Originally signed by the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent in 1959.

Angels in the Background for Kevin Seitzer

Hey, what's Angels catcher Ron Tingley doing on Kevin Seitzer's card? Throwing the ball around the infield after Seitzer struck out is what.



Seitzer is not happy with the umps called third strike I'm imagining.

It kinda looks like he's at Anaheim Stadium with the blue and orange railings but I'm not sure about the rectagular shapes on the railing. I'm not familiar with Milwaukee County Stadium, but I'm leaning towards Anaheim Stadium.

The back of the card shows Seitzer connecting and looking out towards the outfield like it's a hit or a deep drive. We also see more Angels: a coach maybe in the dugout, and the batboy sitting on a stool outside of it. And I know that the Angels dugout has always been on the third base side.



Retrosheet gives me this:
BREWERS 4TH: Listach doubled to center; Yount flied to center
[Listach to third]; Molitor struck out; Bichette singled to left
[Listach scored]; Bichette stole second; Seitzer was called out
on strikes; 1 R, 2 H, 0 E, 1 LOB. Brewers 1, Angels 2.

So Tingly wasn't throwing the ball around, he was pointed at the pitcher for striking Seitzer out looking.

and this:
BREWERS 7TH: Molitor flied to left; Bichette struck out; Seitzer
lined to center; 0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Brewers 1, Angels 2.

So I think it's safe to guess that these photos were taken on the same day
on Wednesday, August 12, 1992 (D) at Anaheim Stadium.

Mondays Angels at Rangers, Autographs

Went to my first Angel game of the year, and first Major League game of the year for that matter, Monday night. The Angels were in town. I think that this is the longest I've gone without going to a game to start out a season.

Anyhow, got there when gates opened at 5, and shortly after that the Angels came out for BP, and I went busy getting autographs. Here's my haul.
