Let's Play Signed or Not Signed

I have a little contest for you.

One of the 18 cards below is signed on the front, guess which one and win! One guess per person, just name the player in the comments (or position number 1-18). Winner can choose to either keep the signed card or I can send you something else, maybe off your wantlist.

Which Game Was It?

Seeing Bob Boone making a cameo on a Joel Skinner card recently made me curious.

Pretty fun trying to figure out which game a photo was taken at. Using Retrosheet I can usually narrow it down if not flat out figure it out.

1989 Upper Deck #328

Right off the bat (no pun intended) the orange padded railings tell me it's at Anaheim Stadium, so the Yankees are visiting, it's a 1989 card so the game was in 1988. Retrosheet tells me the rest.

Saturday August 27, 1988.

It's the 3rd inning, Ron Guidry pitching for starter Charles Hudson who was relieved after giving up 9 runs in 1.1 innings of work. Bob Boone led off with a walk. Dick Schofield and Devon White both struck out. Johnny Ray then lined a double to left. Boone trying to make it all the way home was thrown out at the plate, Rickey Henderson to Joel Skinner. Click. The Angels went on to win 12-0, Terry Clark getting a complete game shutout.

What You Lookin' At, Willis?

Mad, scared, annoyed?
I went through my binders of Angels cards for the Troy Glaus years looking for similar reactions of his, and although he doesn't smile much (I think he usually has a wad of chaw in his mouth) and appears stoic on most cards, on this one he was peeved at something for sure.

Or bug-eyed.

Canadians Crazie Joe and Uncle Sandy Rusty

Well, Joe might be crazy, it's there in his name, but SandyRusty is not really my uncle. My family line does trace back through Canada, but I'm not related to either of these guys, except through TCDB trades, both coming from...Canada.

TCDB #121 CrazieJoe

Two '89 Donruss Ryans because of the different variations on the back.

The sweet 1994 Fun Pack is a die-cut fold-out.

1992-93 Upper Deck McDonalds All-Stars. I'm assuming released in Canada because there's also French on the back.

I love how accessible OPC is now that I'm on TCDB.
Note the three different OPC logos between '82 and '86. Are there even more?

The 1990 is Fleer Canadian.
I don't know much about Fleer Canadian. Did they run parallel with OPC?

Well Worth the Ten Bucks

A TCDB user was on the forums selling 100-card team lots for $10 shipped and I saw that the Angels were available. Being a team collector, I figured I would probably already have most the cards he would send, but for only $10 it was worth the curiosity. Maybe I'll get a few cards I could use.

TCDB #120 Lightningfan7609

Just gonna show them all!

Of the 100 cards sent, I needed 78 of them!

Well worth the $10 to me.

Junk Mall Junk Wax Wednesday

Ripping a random pack of junk wax from the local junk mall.

Pack of 12 cards and 1 PGA Discount Card with a chance to pull a Dean Beman (Commissioner) insert or an Arnold Palmer hologram card. John Daly's rookie card is in this set as well.

When people ask me if I'm a golfer, I say "Have I golfed? Yes. Do I like golf? Yes. Do I consider myself a golfer? No!"

That's because I only get out to golf maybe once a year, and in the last ten years I've been out maybe once. But I do like it. And I'll watch it on TV once in a while, if there's no other sports on.

Haven't heard of any of these guys. Maybe Larry Mize?
I'll WATCH golf, and play rarely, but I'm not fan enough to know most of the pros.

Gary Player I know about. That's probably why his card is a darker shade of green.

Half a mil in 1990? Player indeed.

Really? Ten cents off?
I looked it up. Ten cents in 1991 was twenty-two cents. Still, to design, print and distribute tens of thousands of these for twenty-two cents off?

Trading For Traded

Came away from this trade with 52 of the 69 1983 Topps Traded cards that I still need. Nice to drop a big chunk all at once like that. This was one of my bigger trades with 90 total cards coming my way.

TCDB #119 rencherg

It will be very satisfying filling in all the empty pages for this set.

1993 Triple Play set needs.
Still three short on the Action Baseball inserts: 3, 6, 20.
Need four more of the Nicknames: 1, 6, 7, 8.

1987 The Press Box, Collector's Choices of the 1980's (unlicensed) #28

Anyone want to guess which Angel is in there?

I try to get a checklist in every trade.

You Played For Who?

Raise your hand if you knew that Wally Joyner played for the Braves (no hands get raised, except for those Braves collectors, maybe).

TCDB #117 abide

He actually had a good season his only year in Atlanta in 2000: 119 games, 224 AB, .281 and appeared in the NLDS.

I think all three of those Pacific cards are from the same at bat.

TCDB #118 Matt9975

When Matt went to pull the cards for the transaction and let me know that he wasn't thrilled with the condition of the Vladdy Star Power card, so he added the Aybar card as an extra. I looked over the Vladdy card and barely noticeable is a tiny groove, and very minor edge wear that you have to look hard to see.
Super nice of Matt to go the extra mile and send me an extra card.
