A Very Close Call

I received this PWE in the mail recently exactly like this:

First off I don't blame the sender. The envelope isn't really that thick and he taped it up pretty good and included a thin cardboard backing. I've received a lot of PWEs with top loaders inside and I think that this is maybe the second time one has come torn up like this; however, this is the reason I don't send cards in the heavier top loaders.

I'm just glad that the cards made it here. undamaged.

  1. A part of me feels that even though the sender used non-machinable postage, the post office fed the envelope through their sorter anyway and the edge of the plastic holder caught something...

  2. Just a reminder why I use cardboard on both sides and not just one. You never know what USPS will do to an envelope.

  3. I try to tape down whatever I send and center it in the envelope from end to end. That seems to help it as far as I know. I also feel that almost everything gets sent through the sorting machine. I know everything I have received with a non-machinable stamp on it has evidence that it went through a sorter. Hopefully what I sent to you recently doesn't prove me wrong.

  4. I get a bit of the torn PWE's with top loaders and worse the penny saver plastics. So far no card damage though.

  5. WOW. Thank the fates the card stayed in the envelope relatively safe. It has been a long time but I have received envelopes like that a time or two.

  6. Agree with Matt. Looks like the USPS put this through the sorter even though the sender used a non-machinable stamp. Glad the cards weren't damaged.

  7. That tiny bit of blue tape did the bulk of the work in getting the card to you.

I personally find adding cardboard is not helpful, the cardboard is as likely to poke through the envelope paper as it is to protect the cards. But packing the toploader that way seems to be asking for it to rip through.

  8. I'm more surprised that some postal worker didn't just pocket the card. No one would've noticed.
