3 By 3 Sheets Of LCS Gold

"Gold' is what my LCS guy and I call those boxes of junk that people bring in thinking they have a goldmine of cards to sell.  It always turns out to be 80s-90's junk and nothing but junk...for the most part.
He says that at least once a week he gets a call from someone thinking their Pacific Nolan Ryan card is actually his rookie card, and that they think he's trying to rob them when he says that whole set is worth about five bucks.

We joke that what he buys is junk, but what he sells is GOLD!

Anyhow, he had several new boxes of junk (GOLD to me) to go through today, and man I pulled a ton of stuff I liked.  I like the junk.

GOt a bunch for my player collections.
I've been starting to pull out Tanana cards, he's my latest player.

I was pretty pleased to get the Olerud silver signature, the '93 Leaf Bo Jackson, and the '93 Topps Gold Patriots card.

Came across lots of Angels cards.
Again, pleased to get a Bo Jackson, especially in an Angels uniform.

These are only representative of the stack of Angels I pulled.
It was a big stack, I don't want to bore you.

I pulled these random cards mostly for bloggers and friends that I know would like them.
You may be the lucky recipient of one of these cards.

Sweepstakes!
Given the amount of cards I went through, there were surprisingly few of these.
That Starquest has a scratch-off on the back.
It was only by chance that I turned the card over to discover it.
Didn't know there were Starquest scratchers.

Another representative sample, this time for Topps Glossy All-Star cards.
I pulled nearly a whole 1983 set (although I already had one) and close to a full 1986 set.
And a bunch in between.
Need to get a wantlist together for these now.

Found two really nice miscut cards.
Roy Lee Jackson is wondering what the hay is going on?

Got a really nice stack of checklist cards: several full sets and some that allowed me to complete several sets.

The total stack of cards I pulled was about six inches worth.

That's a good day.

Did Some Eye Peeing Last Night

In Person autographing.
Finally made it up to Frisco to catch a Roughriders game at Dr Pepper Ballpark, the Corpus Christi Hooks were in town.
The Roughriders are the Rangers Class AA team, and Frisco is about an hour from where I live.
We've lived in Texas almost 15 years, and it's taken this long to get up there.

I pulled exactly six cards, five were of the coaches, just in case I had an opportunity to get some in-person autographs (which I haven't done in a looong time), and sure enough I did.

Zach Cone was the only player who's name I knew (and knew that I had a card of) and I thought that I would recognize.
I watched the game on TV the night before and Cone has a distinguishable beard happening for him.

Jeff Andrews is the Riders Pitching Coach, and wears, again, distinguishable glasses.
Just like on his minor league card.

Dan Radison is the Hooks Hitting Coach.
He was probably the oldest guy in uniform.
Easy to spot.

I caught Brocail down the line as he was warming up his pitchers.
He's the Pitching Coach for the Hooks.

I missed out on Joe Mikulik, the Riders Manager, who also has a 1991 Line Drive card, and on Tom Lawless, a coach for the Hooks.  I had a 1986 Topps for him.

I didn't stay until the end of the game, the heat was getting to me, and it's a long drive home.
The Hooks ended up winning 9-3 after a big 5-run 6th inning.

Completed Angels Team Set - 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes

Jim Fregosi gets the nod as the only Angel in this little 24-card set.
Following an alphabetical checklist this unnumbered card would be #8.
These had to be cut from the back of Nabisco cereals.
And apparently there are two sizes of each card due to varying sizes of the box panel.

Here's what it would have looked like on the panel
(though I couldn't find a shot with the Fregosi card)

Pretty cool.

What Took So Long Tom?

Tom Prince TTM return.

1989 Upper Deck #311
1989 Score Rising Stars #45
1992 Stadium Club #332
Sent these 3 cards to Tom at the Pirates minor league complex in Bradenton, FL on February 15, 2013, where he was somehow involved with the Pirates minor leaguers.  His bio on the Altoona Curve website, where he is now the manager, has no stat line for 2013, like he wasn't even employed by the Pirates.  Weird.
Anyhow, 886 days later I received them back, postmarked from Johnstown, PA (about a 45 minute drive from Altoona).
Begs the question, "Where were the cards during those 886 days?"

The Attention Is In The Details

Great thing about collecting cards is that I'm forever coming across cards I've never seen or heard of.

2009 Topps Ticket To Stardom #9
I knew about Ticket To Stardom since it first came out in 2009.
Nice looking card, and the real cool ones came with a piece of a real ticket stub embedded into the card, others have the ticket stub plus a jersey swatch.  I have a Mike Napoli one like that.

But recently I came across this card:

I probably blew right past it a couple times in the past dubbing it a duplicate.
But this time I immediately figured that what I was seeing was some sort of printing error.
You've seen the cards with the roller marks across them.
I thought that's what this was at first.
See the ridges on the top and bottom borders of the card?

But upon closer inspection...

..I determined this was no ordinary printing error.
These are way to consistent and evenly spaced to be a printing error, they look like...
PERFORATIONS!

Ebay quickly solved the mystery.

Each card issued in the set (left) had a "perforated" parallel version (right).
A perforated card was inserted one per pack.
The cards are IDENTICAL except for the BARELY noticeable perforated top and bottom.
Easy to miss.

So go back all of you, to your stack of 2009 Topps Ticket To Stardoms and see if you have any perforated parallels.
Bet you didn't notice them the first time.

Vintage Patriots From Mark Hoyle

Trade Post From Mark Hoyle

Thankfully, this is how Mark works:
Mark see's Pats cards on my LCS post.
Mark asks if I have a Pats want list.
I send Pats want list.
Mark sends Pats cards I need.
Mark is awesome.

1967 Topps
Nothing more retro than vintage football cards, even more so than baseball cards.
Man these are so cool!
I wonder if Topps or Babe ever regretted not reshooting his picture since he blinked in this one.

1974 Wonder Bread
Another super-cool card.
Classic quarterback pose.
Similar to the 1971 Topps set, I assume single cards were inserted into bags of Wonder Bread.

1974-1977 Topps
Knocked off a big chunk of Patriots there.
I like the card of Tom Neville, his head looks way too small for how his massive body fills up the frame.

1971 Milton Bradley
There were a few (former) Angels cards thrown in the mix as well including this nice MB example of Tom Satriano.
I had to confer with my SCBC to figure out if this was a 1969 or 1972 since they are practically identical.  It comes down to the font used for the red "1" on the back to tell the difference.

Always good stuff from you Mark, thanks.

Catching Up With This And That

Going through the stack of odd and ends accumulated over the last few weeks.

But FIRST check out a contest at Bubba's Bangin' Batch of Baseball Bits.

2014 Bowman Platinum Toolsy Die-Cut TDC-CC
That's an extreme die-cut, right up there with 1996 Topps Laser.
Listia win.

2009 Upper Deck USA Baseball National Team USAB-RL
One more for the set.
Listia win.

1993 Score Gold Rush #319
Needed for the team set, but it's also a checklist.
Listia win.

1992 Megacards Babe Ruth Collection
Checkin It Off - completed checklist set.
Two separate Listia wins.

1980 Topps Hit To Win
Love these old scratch-offs.
Found this one searching through junk boxes at the LCS.

1998 Donruss Checklist 2 #167
Flipped this card horizontally and the checklist is upside down.
Printing error?  Can anyone verify this?

1991 Topps Archives 1953 Topps #283
Needed for the autograph set I'm working.
18 days from his home in Pittsburgh, PA.
He included a nice hand-written note and a signed personal card as well.

2015 Bowman Draft Picks DP67
14 days from the Arkansas Travelers.

2015 Bowman Prospects #BP90
14 days from the Arkansas Travelers.

1996 Score #23
Traded for on sportscollectors.net.

1992 Action Packed #30
Needed for the autograph set I'm working.
28 days and $5 from Irving, TX.

2014 Prizm #243
2014 Topps Finest #116
Another 2 rookie cards for the Jimmy Garoppolo Collection.
Separate wins on Listia.

1992 Game Day #128, #78
I normally wouldn't go for these over-size cards but the way they made the backround black-and-white, and used Patriots colors in the font...looks so cool.
Listia win.

Doc Holoday At The AIO Corral

Trade Post From Doc Holoday

I put out an APB on these 2000 Upper Deck Collection sweepstakes cards a month or so ago.
I only had four of the ten cards at the time, then realized there was a variation for the Reggie A's jersey, meaning there were 11 cards to complete the set.
Matt was nice enough to jump all over that post and send me all the cards I needed except one he couldn't locate, the Lou Gehrig jersey card (still need it, hint, hint).

That's a great looking (near) set of sweepstakes cards.

Matt "threw in" two team bags of Angels cards as well.

2013 Gypsy Queen White Framed #224

2015 Gypsy Queen Mini #192

2014 Topps Green #664
Grant Green on a green parallel.
Har-har.

2008 Upper Deck SP Authentic Achievements AA-45

And a sampling of all the other Angels sent:

Good things.
Thanks Matt.

Now to hunt down that last sweepstakes card....
