Some Listia Winnings

What I dig about Listia is that it's all free. The only thing I pay for is postage on the cards I sell, and thats pretty cheap. This has enabled me to pick up some cool stuff, like this cool stuff here.


2011 Diamond Sparkley Tyler Chatwood rookie card. 304 credits and I can check it off my want list.



1998 Pinnacle Mint Collection #22 Frank Thomas. I pick these up here and there. I think I have about half the set. 50 credits.



A couple of really nice 1965 Topps. Again, I pick up '65 and '56 Topps here and there, my two favorite designs. 754 credits.



And these awesome, I-didn't-even-know-they-existed 1971 Topps Football Game inserts. Scored two on two separate auctions netting me the Patriots team set. Jim Nance - 505 cradits, and Ron Berger only 106 credits.

CAL and LAA From SMG

Just about the full spectrum of Angels cards were sent to me from The Sewing Machine Guy.  Nice cards.  Nice Angels cards.

First up, The Vintage.


I love that 1967 Topps Fregosi. I love all Jim Fregosi cards. I especially like team cards too. Often times the photos are so small that you can't see the individual players faces, but they are one of the few cards that I actually like in the landscape format. The design and colors on the 1972 team card make me nauseous, but that's the best part of the 72 set.

Next we head into the SPs and shinies. 

That 2011 Topps Heritage Torii Hunter is an SP.  And just look at that Diamond Anniversary Mike Napoli! Mikey sparkles without the Diamond Anniversary. And lots of pretty numbered Angels chrome: Garret 0116/1958, Vladdy 1653/1959, and Johan 0222/1960.


Refractories!


I never get tired of Angels refractors. I especially like the 2009 Heritage Joe Saunders #407/560. The Troy Glaus is from the 2003 Bowman Chrome set. I didn't realize refractors went back that far. Just when did refractors first show up? The Kelvin Escobar is pretty nifty too in blue.

Bible Card Sunday - Mike Kingery


Mike Kingery had a 10 year career as an outfielder for 6 different teams. He was originally signed by the Royals as an amateur free agent in 1979 but didn't make his debut with them until July 7, 1986. In that debut game he batted third and went 2/4. He batted .349 for Colorado in 1994, third-best in the NL, and in 1995 made his first and only postseason appearance when the Rockies were eliminated in the NLDS by the Braves.

Mike signed my card with John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever should believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."


And Mike's favorite verse is 1 Peter 1:15-16:
"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written, "Be holy, because I am holy."

Dual Window Trumbo

Two new Trumbos.


Look closely at the dual relic. I dont think there are two pieces of material in there. Based on the continuous direction of the air vents in both pieces, I think it's actually one big piece of material.

Maybe Topps should call these Dual Window Relics.

Three Tickets To The Game!

Three tickets to three different games in three consecutive years in the 70's actually.

These stubs were not in the family, so I can't say for sure if I was at any of these games.

Let's see what I might have missed.


Wednesday evening June 24, 1970 vs. Chicago White Sox.
This is the second game of a double-header and after winning the first game 3-1 the Angels took this one as well by winning 2-1.
Mel Queen pitched a 2-hitter through 6 and Eddie Fisher finished up the last 3 for the save. The Angels 7 hits were all singles. The go-ahead and winning run was scored in the Angels 5th when Alex Johnson forced Jim
Fregosi at second, Jim Tatum scampering home from third. Not the most exciting game.


Looks like this stub was pasted in someones scrapbook at one time. I'm not sure what the COUNTED stamp was used for, the ticket was torn already. Ah, wait. Maybe due to the double-header I bet.







Monday evening June 28, 1971 vs. the Kansas City Royals.
Royals Ace Paul Splittorff threw a 9 inning shutout while striking out 5 and getting the 3-0 win. The Angels had 7 hits but stranded 5 runners. Mickey Rivers stole second and Ken McMullen was caught stealing on a strike'em out-throw'em out. Archie Reynolds took the loss giving up all 3 runs in 6 innings.


Nice clean back on this one.







Wednesday evening August 30, 1972 vs. the Detroit Tigers.
The Angels beat the Tigers 4-1 behind a complete game by Andy Messersmith who struck out 9. Vada Pinson had 2 RBI in the game off 2 singles, and also hit a double.


Appears this ticket was in one of those old magic photo albums as noted by the striping and paper loss on the back.

Completed Team Set - 2004 Bazooka Tattoos

One of the insert sets for 2004 Bazooka were temporary tattoos. There were 55 different tattoos in the set. The Angels had 3 bobblehead-looking guys featuring a real photo of their head atop a cartoon body. Kinda dorky but pretty cool in their own Bazooka way.


Card JW Jarrod Washburn. Jarrod is a pitcher, a very serious pitcher. And he has big muscles.


Card TS Tim Salmon. Tim is happy. Tim is always happy. And we already knew that Tim had big muscles.


Card TG Troy Glaus. Troy is looking at his big fly leave the ballpark. But Troy, you haven't swung yet. Troy's muscles look bigger than Tim's because Troy is wearing grey.


Bazooka Joe must have applied the tattoo too close to his eye dispite the warning on the back. Now he has to wear an eyepatch.

Zoiks and no wonder! Look at those ingredients! These things are toxic!

Angels Cards From Drew's Cards

Drewscards sent over a sweet little bunch of Angels cards in exchange for some stuff I sent him. I picked out a few from the team-set sized bag of cards.

2010 Topps Pro Debut Futures Game FGR-TR Trevor Reckling Jumbo Jersey 019/139. This is my first jumbo jersey card and all I can say is SU_WEET!
Trevor is currently in AA ball for the Angels.



1974 Topps #55 Frank Robinson. This is the last card I needed for my 1974 Topps Angels team set. Frank still had some pop in his bat in 1974. He hit 20 HRs and 26 doubles, and drove in 63 in 427 ABs. He was traded to the Indians near the end of the season.



2001 Upper Deck SP #DE Authentic Fabric Darin Erstad with a hint of a pinstripe!



Not 1 but 2 2010 Topps Goldies. The Juan Rivera is a base card and is numbered 0015/2010, perhaps one of my lowest numbered cards ever. Brian Stokes is an update card numbered 1615/2010.  Note the differences in the "Topps 59 Years of Collecting" stamp in the upper left corner.  Any reason for the difference?

Bible Card Sunday - Bob Patterson


Bob Patterson was an Angel for only 2 of his 13 Major League seasons (1994-1995).  In those 2 years he went 7-5 with a 3.49 ERA in 95.1 innings of relief.  Bob also played with San Diego (85), Pittsburgh (86-92), Texas (93), and the Cubs (96-98).  Patterson was known as the Glove Doctor since he was often asked by many players, even opposing players, to repair their broken gloves.  Some of his methods of repair included the incorporation of coat hangers, tongue depressers, and extra leather.  Not sure if he used those as tools or not.  I think it would have been illegal to have a chunk of a metal coat hanger in your glove!



Bob signed this card with Philippians 4:6-13 (I think) which includes his favorite verses Philippians 4:11-13
"For I have learned to be content whatever the circunstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him (Christ) who gives me strength."

A Trade For An Autographed Wally Joyner

Fellow SCN collector Scott reached out asking about a signed 1991 Eric Karros rookie card I had for trade. He had several nice in-person Angels autographs to choose from, and I selected this 1987 Topps Wally Joyner.


Joyner does not sign through the mail, but I understand that he's pretty good in person, so trading is about the only way I can add his autograph to my collection.

I have a couple different 1988 cards signed, but I wanted an '87 card to add to the collection. Now I just need a signed 1986 rookie card.

Completed Team Set - 1970 Kellogg's

Only one Angel was represented in this 75 card 1970 inaugural set from Kellogg's.

Jim Fregosi won the honor:


Single 3-D cards were inserted into selected brands of cereal boxes. A complete set could be obtained through a mail-in offer. The cards are smaller than a standard baseball card and measure 2-1/4" x 3-1/2".

Recent mail Returns

I didn't have a card for Carl Erskine, the few I had he'd already signed years ago, so I sent him a custom index card. He returned that, and thoughtfully included this nice Diamond Signatures card.

Mr Erskine returned these in 20 days from his home in Indiana.

Next up a bunch of Patriots. I've ramped up my TTM for Patriots football cards.


Brian Dowling was a Patriots quarterback from 1972-1973. He signed his sole Topps football card, a 1974, and my custom Patriots index card in 8 days.


Mike Montler nicely signed his 1973 Topps card and answered a couple questions, in 8 days from his home in Colorado.


Rounding out the mail is Jim Whalen who signed his 1969 Topps card in 32 days. Jim was a Boston Patriot tight end from 1965-1969.

Patriots Autograph of the Month - Willie McGinest


Willie McGinest was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 1st round (4th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft out of USC and was a DE-LB for the Patriots from 1994-2005.  He played 3 more seasons with the Browns after that.  In 2005 McGinest set an NFL postseason record by recording 4.5 sacks in one game as well as breaking Bruce Smith's record for the most all-time sacks in the postseason with 16. He ranks third all time for the Patriots with 76 career sacks. He ranks second in the NFL with career fumbles returned for touchdowns (39).  He's a two-time Pro Bowler (1995, 2003) and a three-time Super Bowl Champion (2001, 2003, 2004).   


I received this card in a trade with another SCN member.

Those Blue Books On My Bookshelf

The question was asked the other day about the blue-spined books on my bookshelf.  I thought what a great idea for a post!

This is one of the books in question:

Baseball Legends - Jimmie Foxx

This series of 40 books were published in 1991 by Chelsea House Publishers.

This one was written by Norm Macht but there are several different authors used in the series.

You can see the checkmark next to the one's that I have. I'm lacking only three: Roy Campanella, Dizzy Dean, and Pete Rose.

I picked these books up back around 1998-1999 at the 99-Cent Only stores in Southern California. Yep, a buck a piece. But I acquired them roughly 2 or 3 at a time, so it took a while to amass the 37 books I have.

The books are roughly 60 pages with a scattering of black-and-white photos of the player represented. The last two pages give a chronology of the players life and his career statistics.

The photo quality is actually pretty good and there are several full-page photos throughout.

Check out the book price in the lower left corner, $14.95! No wonder I found them on blow-out for a buck a piece at the 99-Cent Only Stores. A full series at that price would have cost $598.00, plus tax!
